Thylacines is a Model 85 Loche Crowther design aluminium catamaran, built at Ballina NSW, Australia by a professional ship builder and launched in 1996. Her strong construction and efficient underwater lines mean that she is a true blue water cruiser, the original owner having made the crossing to New Zealand several times while the current owner has circumnavigated Tasmania and crossed Bass straight many times as well as sailing South East Asia extensively.
The Vessel has good performance under both sail and power, requiring as little as 15 Knots of wind abaft the beam to achieve 8 knots but capable of much higher speeds having once achieved 23knots in a squall. She has a mast head sloop rig and the mast is heavy duty with oversized standing rigging. The sail plan includes a 150% screecher, 125% genoa, stay sail and main. While the current trend is for a fractional rig with a large roached main, Thylacines rig has superior down wind performance where most cruising sailing is done.
The current owner acquired the vessel in 2002. In 2006 a refit to remodel and upgrade, mostly, the saloon and galley was undertaken resulting a galley with a full-size oven, gas hob, ~300L fridge, a sperate 100L freezer and the addition of a water maker.
A further refit in 2009 added 1200W of solar panels 2 x D400 wind turbines, 1100Ahr of battery bank, a 2nd anchor windless, chain and anchor, a 2nd tender with outboard, 2nd auto pilot, 2nd inverter charger. The aim was to eliminate any potential single point of failure of major systems. A final refit in 2012 saw the vessel repowered with new larger, diesel engines (Westerbeke 44B) and new sails.
In 2013, Thylacines departed Australia for an extended cruise of SE Asia. In 2018 she hauled out at Pangkor Marina, Lumut, Malaysia for routine maintenance. A motor vehicle accident and COVID lock downs separated the owner from vessel in an unplanned way for more than 4 years during which no maintenance was performed.
Thylacines is currently on the hard stand at Pankor Marina and is offered for sale on an as is where is bases and priced accordingly. Pangkor is a full service marina ( https://www.noonsite.com/report/malaysia-west-coast-lumut-pangkor-marina-or-hotel-california/ ) with prices typically ¼ or less than the costs in Australia or Europe.
